Define the wash and strobe roles separately
A combined fixture may provide colour wash, high-output white strobe, segmented effects and motorized movement from one rigging position. Write down how each function will be used. A broad colour layer, a short strobe hit and a pixel chase place different demands on output, segment count and console programming.
Check the complete outdoor system
Protection ratingConfirm the fixture and relevant connections are suitable for the planned environment, then follow the operating instructions.
Power loadUse rated power to size circuits and distribution. Include startup behaviour, cable length and the rest of the rig in the calculation.
Signal connectionsCheck connector type and sealing practice for DMX, network and power at every point in the data and distribution chain.
Network controlArt-Net is useful for high channel counts, but switches, IP addressing, nodes and redundancy should be planned and tested.
Channel modesSelect the mode that provides the required segment detail while remaining manageable for the console and programmer.
Rigging clearanceAllow for clamps, safeties, fixture dimensions and the full movement range relative to roofs, truss and scenery.
What IP65 tells you
IP65 indicates protection against dust ingress and water jets under the rating standard. It does not mean the fixture can be submerged, ignore connector handling or operate outside its stated temperature range. The complete rig still needs an appropriate site plan, drainage, cable routing, inspection and response procedure for changing conditions.
Plan control around segment count
Segmented RGB and white sources can use a substantial number of channels at full resolution. For straightforward wash and strobe cues, a compact mode may be sufficient. For chases and detailed pixel effects, a larger mode gives the programmer more control. Agree the mode before patching so the fixture personality, universe allocation and network bandwidth are correct.
| Planning item | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| DMX mode | How much individual RGB and white segment control does the show require? |
| Protocol | Will the rig use direct DMX, RDM, Art-Net or a combination? |
| Network | Where are the switches, nodes and backup paths, and who owns the addressing plan? |
| Programming | Are fixture personalities and channel counts confirmed before pre-visualisation and rehearsal? |
Build the quotation around the real site
Provide the fixture quantity, destination, stage or event type, mounting plan, control protocol, expected environment, power information and project date. If the fixture will move, include the available clearance. These details are more useful than asking for a unit price without the operating context.
